Most things here are answered below. If yours is not, use the contact form or email [email protected] — a person reads both.

Getting started

You need an account, and the people you split with mostly do not. Add someone to a group or as a friend by name and you can start recording what they owe immediately; add their email and their side links up to their own account when they have one. Nobody has to install anything for you to keep an accurate tab.

Splitting a bill

An expense can be divided equally, by share, by exact amounts, by percentage, or by adjustment — one person covers something extra and the rest is split evenly. You can change the method after the fact; balances recalculate.

Photograph a receipt and it can be read for you: merchant, amount, date, and the individual items, so you can tap who had what. Free accounts get a monthly allowance of AI credits, shared by the scanner and the assistant; the scan screen shows how many are left and what a scan uses.

Recurring payments and instalments

Anything that repeats — rent, a subscription, a salary — can be put on repeat fromRecurring, weekly, monthly or yearly. Give it an end date and it stops by itself after the last payment: that is what an instalment is, and it is how you record one. The Recurring page can show only the ones that end.

The assistant

Ask it about your own money — what you spent last month, who owes you, whether a budget is blown, whether a car or an instalment plan fits what you earn — or tell it what you spent and it prepares the entry. It looks up only what your question needs, from your own account, and it never saves anything: whatever it proposes opens the ordinary form for you to check. Its answers are arithmetic on your own figures, not professional financial advice, and it can be wrong. Each reply uses one AI credit.

Discover also has calculators for a home, car or personal loan, a savings goal and savings growth. They run on your device and keep nothing.

Receipts, renewal and cancelling Gen Pass

If you bought Gen Pass inside the app, Apple or Google is the seller. They charge you, email you a receipt for the first payment and each renewal, and handle refunds. The subscription renews by itself until you cancel it, and it is changed or cancelled in your store account: on an iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android,Play Store → Payments & subscriptions. Me in the app has a button that opens that screen. We cannot issue an invoice for a store purchase or see your payment details; the store's receipt is your record. If you bought on the website, the receipt comes by email from Stripe and Manage or cancel on Me opens your billing page.

Connecting your own AI app

If you use an AI app that supports remote MCP servers with a token — Claude Code and Codex do — you can let it read your ExpenseGen records. Open Me → Connected AI → Connect an AI, name the connection, and copy the address and the token into that app; the token is sent as an Authorization: Bearer header. The token is shown once.If you lose it, disconnect and make another. The app can answer questions from your records and propose expenses, income and recurring payments, which appear under Waiting for you on the same screen until you review and save them or dismiss them. It uses no AI credits. Up to five connections; disconnect one at any time and it stops working at once. Apps that only sign in through a browser pop-up cannot connect yet.

Settling up

ExpenseGen never moves money. It shows how the person being paid has said they can be paid — a QR to scan, account details to copy, or both, from any bank or wallet in any country — and the payment happens entirely inside your own banking or e-wallet app, between the two of you. We are not a payment service and hold no funds. Add your own underMe → Ways to be paid. Links are not accepted there, on purpose: nobody should be asked to tap a link to send money.

Because of that, marking something settled is a claim by the payer that the recipient confirms — two-sided, never automatic, and never inferred from a screenshot. If a balance looks wrong, check whether the other person has confirmed it yet.

Gen Pass

The free tier is a complete product: recording, groups, splitting, settling, reports and CSV export are not going behind a paywall. Gen Pass lifts the monthly allowances and adds the parts that do work for you — unlimited receipt scanning and assistant replies, extra ledgers, PDF statements, your year in review.

What it costs and what it includes are on the Gen Pass page in the app, which shows the live price for your country and how much of this month's allowance you have used. Cancelling keeps access until the period you have already paid for ends.

Where to buy it, and where to cancel. In the iPhone or Android app it is sold through Apple or Google's own in-app purchase; on this website, through Stripe. It belongs to your ExpenseGen account, so one purchase works everywhere — buy it once. Cancel where you bought it: in your Apple or Google account for an in-app purchase, or fromMe → Edit profile for one made here.

Your data

Export is free and needs no request: Me → Export my data gives you everything as JSON, and Export my expenses gives you a spreadsheet-ready CSV.

Deleting your account is at Me → Edit profile → Delete my account. It deactivates immediately and erases after 30 days; signing back in inside that window cancels it. Shared group history stays with the group, without your name — the other people in it keep a coherent record of what they spent. Export first if you want a copy.

Receipt photographs are kept in private storage that is not reachable by URL. Every view is checked against the same permission that guards the expense, so whoever can see the expense can see its receipt, and nobody else can.

Common problems

I can't sign in

Use forgot password. The link goes to your email address, so whoever controls that inbox can recover the account. Resetting signs you out everywhere on purpose — the usual reason to reset is thinking someone else is in there.

Someone can't join my group

Share the group's 8-character code, or add them by email. If they already have an account under a different address, add that one — a group member and an account are linked by email.

An expense I added isn't showing for everyone

Check whether it was marked private. A private expense is visible only to the person who paid, by design.

The balance doesn't match what I expect

A group page totals what the group spent; Reports totals your share. Two different questions, two different numbers, both correct.

Reporting something urgent

If you think someone else has access to your account, reset your password first — that signs out every device — then email [email protected]. If you have found a security problem, please send it to that address rather than posting it publicly, and give us a chance to fix it.
